Welsh Onion

Welsh Onion is a hardy, delicious and extremely useful perennial variety that has a strong onion flavour contained within attractive stems. We love to chop this variety into a stir fry, salad or an omelette!

Welsh Onion Growing Advice

Sowing Indoors

• Welsh Onion can be sown indoors into module trays or pots during early spring.  Sow the seeds around 1.5cm deep and cover lightly with growing medium.  As the seedlings emerge, provide them with light and water as required.  The resulting plants can be gradually hardened off and planted into their final planting position, allowing a 10cm spacing between plants. They will enjoy growing in a sunny or lightly shaded position.

Sowing Outdoors

• You can sow welsh onion seeds directly outdoors into shallow drills during mid to late spring.  Sow the seeds around 1.5cm deep and cover with growing medium.  Thin out the seedlings as they emerge, eventually thinning to a spacing of 10cm between each plant.  

Ongoing care and harvest

• Keep your plants watered as they grow, especially during warm dry weather.
• If flowers emerge, cut them off to ensure the plant continues producing fresh new leaves.
